What is BCS?

The acronym BCS refers to Bangladesh Civil Service. In a country, we can primarily divide government jobs into two categories, military service or civil service. In simple terms, to get an appointment in government civil services, you need to pass the BCS exam. The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) publishes a gazette for recruitment as a cadre in the Bangladesh Civil Service, and the exam taken for this purpose is the BCS exam. The exam is highly competitive, and has three core stages that take approximately two years to finish.

The Bangladesh Civil Service is an important part of Bangladeshi society and plays an important role in upholding democracy, justice, and human rights. The main objectives of the Bcs are to serve the people of Bangladesh and to uphold the Constitution. The Civil Service is also responsible for providing essential government services such as education, health care, infrastructure development, and more. The Bangladesh Civil Service is made up of a diverse group of professionals who work together to provide quality services to the people of Bangladesh.

Who is eligible to apply?

There are many people who have passed the BCS exam but still couldn’t become a cader. Surprising, right?

The civil service is one of the most prestigious jobs in Bangladesh. Therefore, before applying for this job, candidates are carefully evaluated to determine if they are eligible. However, there are not many hard and fast rules for eligibility.

Many people are afraid to take the BCS exam due to their physical problems. Also there are many concerns and fears about the BCS exam, especially for those who did not perform well in university exams and have a low CGPA. We tend to focus on negative thoughts and concerns, but we should remember that worrying about something that doesn’t exist is pointless. Let us help you to give complete guidelines about the eligibility requirements for the BCS exam.

“Basically, four types of eligibility criteria are considered for BCS application for candidates:

Educational qualifications

  • A candidate cannot participate in the exam if they do not have the educational qualifications mentioned in the advertisement for the cadre position in their application.
  • If a candidate has passed an approved university exam in the desired subject or category, they will be eligible to take the BCS exam. However, in such cases, proof of passing all written exams must be attached to the BCS exam application within the deadline.
  • The application mentioned in Sub-section (2) will be accepted temporarily, and in such cases, the concerned candidate will be considered as a passed candidate.
  • The successful candidate must obtain the necessary educational qualifications or submit a temporary certificate from the commission to obtain them from the university as soon as possible before the oral exam.
  • Under this provision, the applicant candidate must attach the required documents with their application to participate in the exam.

Age limit

On the date of issuance of the advertisement for the BCS exam by the PSC, If a candidate’s age is below 21 or above 30 then they will not be eligible to participate in the BCS exam.

The age limit is sometimes eased in certain situations.

  • The maximum age limit for freedom fighters’ sons or daughters, disabled candidates, and health cadre candidates is 32 years.
  • For general education, technical education, and tribal candidates in the health cadre, the maximum age limit is also 32 years.

Citizenship

  • Candidates who are not citizens of Bangladesh will not be considered eligible to participate in the examination.
  •  Any candidate who is married to a foreign national or has committed to marrying one without prior permission from the government will not be considered eligible to participate in the examination.

Physical fitness

Candidates who pass the written and oral exams are required to undergo a medical test. If a candidate fails the medical test, they are not eligible for employment as a cadre.

If the medical board does not declare a candidate fit health-wise and the candidate is not suffering from any physical disability that would create an obstacle in performing duties in the designated cadre, then the candidate will not be considered eligible for employment in the designated cadre if the medical board does not issue such a certificate.

THE EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination is a three-phase process including a very thorough background check of the candidates who make it through. As per the rules of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Age, Qualification, and Direct Recruitment) Regulations 2014, the Public Service Commission conducts three levels of recruitment examinations to select suitable candidates for appointment to the Bangladesh Civil Service.
